About Lake Tana

Lake Tana covers 3,673 km² and is Ethiopia's largest lake. Its 37 islands and peninsulas shelter some of the country's oldest Orthodox monasteries — many founded in the 14th–17th centuries — preserving illuminated manuscripts, frescoes and royal relics. Easily explored by motor-boat day trips from Bahir Dar.
