About Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale covers 1,613 km² along the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. Its star attraction is the M-group, a 60-strong habituated community of eastern chimpanzees studied since 1965 by Japanese primatologists. Trekking is a full-day forest slog from a beachside camp — the reward is sitting within metres of chimpanzees against a backdrop of 2,462 m forested peaks rising straight from the lake.

Highlights

  • Habituated M-group chimpanzees
  • White-sand lake beaches
  • Lake Tanganyika 2nd deepest lake
  • Access only by boat or bush flight
  • Kayaking + snorkelling
