About Harar Jugol

Harar Jugol is a 16th-century walled city in eastern Ethiopia, 520 km from Addis. Within its 5-metre stone walls sit 82 mosques (three from the 10th century) and 102 shrines — the fourth-holiest city in Islam. UNESCO-listed since 2006. The evening hyena-man tradition, where wild spotted hyenas are hand-fed raw meat from the mouth of a local, dates back centuries.
