Harar Jugol is Ethiopia's most extraordinary city — a labyrinth of 368 narrow alleys behind a 5-metre walled perimeter, 82 mosques and 102 shrines, all living much as they did in the 16th century. UNESCO-listed since 2006. The city's one-of-a-kind tradition is the nightly hyena feeding, where spotted hyenas approach the city walls and eat raw meat directly from the hand — and mouth — of a local. This trip combines Harar with Awash National Park's oryx plains and the dramatic Awash River Gorge.
