Awash covers 827 km² on the eastern edge of the Rift Valley, 225 km east of Addis on the Addis–Djibouti highway. Established in 1966 as Ethiopia's first national park. Highlights include the 250-metre-deep Awash River Gorge, the 2,007 m dormant Fentale volcano, Filwoha hot springs, and signature dry-country wildlife — beisa oryx, Soemmerring's gazelle, greater kudu, and 460+ bird species.
