About Mount Meru

Meru is Tanzania's second-highest peak after Kilimanjaro, sitting inside Arusha National Park. Its classic 3–4 day horseshoe-crater climb is one of East Africa's most enjoyable treks — dramatic inner crater views, ash cone, bushbuck and buffalo on the forest approach, and unlike Kili you may trek largely alone. Often used as the perfect acclimatisation climb before a Kilimanjaro summit.

Highlights

  • 4,566 m summit (TZ's 2nd highest)
  • Inner ash cone + crater rim walk
  • Wildlife on forest stage
  • Armed-ranger mandatory (buffalo/lion)
  • Best Kili acclimatisation climb
