About Omo Valley

The lower Omo River valley is one of Africa's last great cultural frontiers — more than fifty ethnic groups live in relative isolation, including the Mursi (famous for women's lip plates), Hamer (whose young men leap across cattle backs for adulthood rites), Karo (elaborate body painting with white chalk and ochre), Dassanech and Surma. Most visits are based at Turmi or Jinka and require 4×4 overland travel. UNESCO-listed Lower Omo Valley World Heritage Site.
