Akagera is Rwanda's 1,122 km² eastern savanna park on the Tanzanian border. After decades of poaching losses the park was handed to African Parks in 2010; lions were reintroduced in 2015 and rhinos in 2017. Today the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhino) are all present. Rolling acacia woodland, papyrus wetlands, and a string of lakes — very different from Rwanda's gorilla country and an ideal counterpoint.
