Danakil Depression Expedition — 4 Days
Erta Ale lava lake by night + Dallol's technicolour sulfur springs — the hottest place on Earth.
Overview
The Danakil Depression is the lowest, hottest inhabited place on Earth — an active rift of sulfur springs, salt plains, and volcanoes. This 4-day Mekele-based circuit reaches two unforgettable landscapes: the lava-lake summit of Erta Ale at night (night-climb with summit bivouac on the crater rim) and the other-worldly yellow-green-red hydrothermal field of Dallol, which you walk across with only a local guide.
The Afar people live here in one of the most hostile environments on the planet and have cut salt from the Lake Asale plain for centuries — the camel salt caravans still operate and you may cross them on the road back. Armed escort is government-mandated; this is a physically tough but manageable trip for reasonably fit travellers.
Route: Mekele → Berhale → Erta Ale summit bivouac → Dodom → Dallol → Lake Asale salt flats → Mekele
