From the 10th to the 16th centuries, Kilwa Kisiwani was East Africa's richest Swahili trading port — controlling the gold trade out of Great Zimbabwe and minting its own gold coins. The UNESCO-listed ruins (inscribed 1981) include the Great Mosque, the 100-room Husuni Kubwa palace (the largest stone structure in East Africa until the 19th century), and the Portuguese-era Gereza fort. Songo Mnara, the smaller sister island, has arguably better-preserved Swahili domestic architecture.
