Overview

Lake Kivu is one of Africa's Great Lakes — 2,700 km², bilharzia-free, stretching along Rwanda's western border with the DRC. The 227 km Congo Nile Trail runs its entire eastern shore from Rubavu in the north to Rusizi in the south. You can't do it all in 5 days, but we pick the three most scenic sections on foot or mountain bike, and finish with island-hopping out of Karongi (Kibuye).
