Mount Karisimbi (4,507 m) is the highest of the Virunga volcanoes and Rwanda's tallest peak. The 2-day climb starts from Bisoke trailhead in Volcanoes National Park, ascending through bamboo, Hagenia-Hypericum belt, afro-alpine giant-lobelia forest, and — above 4,200 m — an ice-cold basalt wasteland. The bivouac at 3,660 m is one of the coldest nights you'll spend in East Africa. Pre-dawn summit push on day 2, descent all the way out same day.
Real prior altitude experience (Mt Kenya or Kilimanjaro) is strongly recommended.
