The two true summits of Mt Kenya are Batian (5,199 m) and Nelion (5,188 m) — vertical granite spires first climbed by Halford Mackinder in 1899. Reaching them requires multi-pitch alpine rock climbing at UIAA IV+ / V- (5.6 YDS).
Our 8-day programme includes 3 acclimatisation days on the Sirimon route, a full day to climb the Normal Route on Nelion's south-east face, bivouac in the Howell Hut at the summit of Nelion, the short crossing of the Gate of the Mists to Batian at dawn, and rappel descent the same day.
Prior multi-pitch rock experience (UIAA IV+) is mandatory.
Route: Nairobi → Sirimon Gate → Shipton's → Kami Hut → Nelion (Normal Route) → Gate of the Mists → Batian → Shipton's → Sirimon → Nairobi
